The BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2016 season on the 30th/31st July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville.
In conditions hotter than normal, the dress code had to be relaxed for the comfort of the players. Despite the heat, there was some excellent pool on show as usual.
Fred Dinsmore was keen to extend his lead at the top of the rankings, but he knew that any slip-up and Daniel Lee would be closing in on him in his bid to be no.1 in the rankings at the end of the season, and take with it the beautiful cue donated by tour sponsors Predator Cues.
As the final 10-ball of the weekend was potted it was Lee who took home the spoils with victory over Dinsmore.
Lee started off with a 6-2 win over Alexander Prokopiev who had again made the 11,000 Kilometer journey from Yakutsk in Russia, all of BWPPA thank Alexander for his efforts, which put some of the journeys the British players have to make into perspective.
Lee then followed this up with a 7-5 win over Tony Southern. This sent him into the semi-final.
In the other half of the draw, Dinsmore was in devastating form, beating Matt Lester and Danny Luton 6-0 to reach the semi-finals.
In the play-off round Craig Welsh played some of the best pool of his career to beat Southern 6-2, and Luton beat Nicky Oliver 6-0, but Oliver would have a better day on the Sunday.
The first semi-final saw Lee winning convincingly 6-0 over Luton. The second semi-final was much closer than the 6-3 score line in favour of Dinsmore suggests, and Welsh can be proud of his efforts over the weekend.
The Main event final between Dinsmore and Lee was high quality. The game turned on two missed 10-balls by Dinsmore, which he would get 99/100 times, which made the score 4-2 to Lee. In the end, it was Lee who won his 3rd event out of 4 with a 6-2 victory.
In the latest BWPPA Rankings, Lee has jumped 20 points ahead of Dinsmore at the top, and whilst it is now looking like a 2 man race, with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one.
The Challenge Cup final was won by Oliver who beat Prokopiev 5-4, to lead the challenge rankings with 2 events remaining.
A video of the main event final is available here. Pictures of the event will be are here in the BWPPA gallery.
The next event is the Kamui 9-ball Shootout, which will be held at the Escape Pool Bar, Barnsley on the weekend of 10th/11th September 2016. In a concerted effort from BWPPA to expand the tour, this will be a free entry event for all players, and there will be extra money added to the prize fund if 16 or more players attend.
