Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley. Hosted the penultimate event on the 2017 BWPPA calendar the Kamui 9-ball Shootout. There was a star-studded field as this weekend was a double header with the inaugural Nation Continental Cup team event running alongside it. Belgium’s Kurt Deklerck, Norwegian Kim Ronny Nygård, Finland’s Jouni Tahti and current wheelchair World 9-ball champion Sweden’s Henrik Larsson were among the entrants.
As expected there was some close matches in the early stages of the competition, among them Deklerck’s 7-5 win over Nygård, Roy Kimberley’s 7-5 win over Dave Beaumont and Larsson beating Aslam Abubaker 7-4.
Daniel Lee began his campaign strongly with a 7-3 win over Adam Pearson, he followed that up with an impressive 7-2 win over Ireland’s Dinsmore. Alexander Prokopiev from Yakutsk in Russia returned to England for his second BWPPA event of the year. Prokopiev had a tough opening match losing 7-1 to Tahti. In the one loss side of the draw Prokopiev went onto beat Matt Lester 5-1 before running into Dinsmore, who beat the Russian 7-0.
The quarter-final line up could have graced any European or World Championship; in the first quarter-final it was Lee who beat Kimberley 7-4 to advance through to the semis. Leicester’s Aslam Abubaker came through a 7-5 winner over Deklerck. Dinsmore booked his place in the last 4 with a 7-0 win over Tony Southern. Tahti completed the quartet with a 7-4 win over Larsson.
We had contrasting semi-finals; Lee beat Abubaker 7-2 to go through to his third BWPPA main event final of the season. In the other semi Dinsmore edged a hill-hill classic Jouni Tahti, Dinsmore the victor with a 7-6 score line.
In the latest chapter of the Lee v Dinsmore rivalry that we’ve seen on the BWPPA tour in recent years it was Lee who came through a 3-1 winner to confirm his place as the no.1 British wheelchair pool player for another season. The final was curtailed to best of 5 with both players agreement to start the final NCC session.
In the challenge event Beaumont beat Nygård and Craig Welsh before beating Prokopiev 5-3 after overcoming Prokopiev’s 2 racks race start . Beaumont now leads the way in the Challenge Cup rankings sponsored by World Pool Series with just the BWPPA Predator British 9-ball Championship remaining.

Sadly on 13th October Nick Oliver passed away. Nicky was one of our most loyal and supportive members and he will be dearly missed. His funeral will take place on Tues 7th November 1.30pm at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Farnham Rd, Sheet, Petersfield, Hants GU32 2AQ. Many members will be attending and flowers will be sent from everyone at BWPPA. Good night god bless mate you will never be forgotten.
On 27th November Nick’s mom and dad sent this message to everyone at BWPPA.
Our sincere thanks to all BWPPA members who attended Nick’s funeral on 7th November and for the flowers and condolences.
It was really touching to see the players turn out to say goodbye to Nick. and we really appreciate it.
Nick really loved the game and got pleasure from competing in BWPPA events and thought highly of you all.
Kathy and I are struggling to come to terms with our loss and the huge void in our life.
Once again thank you for your kind tribute to Nick.

The biggest event in wheelchair cue-sports came to Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley with the inaugural Nation Continental Cup. The Nation Continental Cup is a new team event contested between Great Britain and Europe, modelled on the hugely successful Mosconi Cup, which has been promoted by Matchroom Sport and televised globally since 1994.
The hosts fielded a team made up of the top 3 in the BWPPA rankings Daniel Lee, Tony Southern and Roy Kimberley. The fourth spot went to a wildcard selected by Great Britain team captain Kimberley, former BWPPA no.1 player Aslam Abubaker was the recipient and the final spot went to the winner of a qualifying competition Dave Beaumont.
The Europeans began as favourites by way of the number of major international titles won by members of their team. Current wheelchair World 9-ball Champion Henrik Larsson took the role of captain; joining him on team Europe was Finland’s Jouni Tahti, Belgian Kurt Deklerck, Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore and a late arrival to the European outfit Kim Ronny Nygård.
Following the opening ceremony the action got underway with a team match, a format fans of the Mosconi Cup will be familiar with. All 5 members of each team played alternating shots. Home advantage may have played a part; it was the Brits who claimed the opening point with a 5-2 win. Lee and Beaumont made it 2-0, taking the first scotch doubles match of the contest with a 5-1 win over Larsson and Nygård.
The European pairing of Tahti and Deklerck came back from 3-1 down against Kimberley and Southern to take the match 5-3 and give the visitors a chance to level the scores at the end of the first session. It was singles to close the first session and Ireland’s Dinsmore beat an out of sorts Abubaker 5-1 to level the scores at 2-2 going into the evening session on the opening day.
The evening session of day 1 opened up with a scotch doubles clash. Larsson and Tahti maintained the Europeans momentum as they defeated Beaumont and Kimberley 5-2, Dan Lee then restored British spirits with a terrific 5-0 win over Nygård, only for Deklerck and Dinsmore to nudge the Europeans ahead again, this time with a 5-2 win over Abubaker and Southern. In the final match of the opening day Lee beat Deklerck 4-3. Both sides will have had reasons to believe they could have been in front. A score of 4-4 overnight reflected the opening day.
The Europeans got off to a dream start on day 2 with Tahti beating Beaumont 4-3, in a match that wasn’t without controversy. There was a huge turning point when Beaumont potted the 9-ball and raise his cue to celebrate what he thought was a massive 4-3 win over the multi world champion, only for the cue ball to come back down the table and made contact with the bridge, handing the game to Tahti, who went on to clinch the decider.
Larsson defeating Abubaker 4-2 and Dinsmore beating Kimberley 4-3, gave the Europeans a 7-4 lead. Southern gave the Brits some hope with a 4-0 victory over Nygård, only for the duo of Dinsmore and Tahti to beat Lee and Abubaker 5-2 to give the Europeans a commanding 8-5 lead going into the final day.
We were honoured to have Sky Sports walk on girl Jade Slusarczyk and Darren Appleton in attendance for the final session. There was no more scotch doubles, it was singles all the way, the ultimate pressure zone.
Southern edged Henrik Larsson 4-3 in the first of the day’s matches. If the Brits were to have any hope they had to build on this. Deklerck and Dinsmore put the Europeans 1 point away from clinching the title with 4-2 and 4-0 wins over Lee and Kimberley respectively.
Beaumont almost kept the contest alive, but he missed a 5-9 combination shot, which allowed Tahti to clear the table, wrap up a 4-3 victory and give the Europeans the title of Nation Continental Cup Champions 2017.
During the closing ceremony Darren Appleton awarded Fred Dinsmore the MVP award. Darren also announced that he would continue to work with the BWPPA to help the Nation Continental Cup grow in the future.

The BWPPA season approached the midway point as the players arrived at the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury. It was to be an action packed weekend of pool, as in addition to the Talisman Billiards British 10-ball Championship (tour stop 3 of the regular season) there was the small matter of who would win the qualifier to be the last man onto the Great Britain Nation-Continental Cup team.
Before that could be decided the main event of the Talisman British 10-ball Championship got underway. The tour welcomed back Chris Brown who returned to the BWPPA tour for the first time since 2015. Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore also returned to the tour after missing the first 2 tour stops of 2017, as did Aslam Abubaker fresh from winning the WEPF English 8-ball pool World Championship for wheelchair players in Blackpool.
Abubaker who won the Simonis Grand Prix main event in May got off to a flyer with a 7-0 win over Birmingham’s Adam Pearson. He followed that up with a 7-4 win over Daniel Lee. That defeat sent the defending British 10-ball Champion and UK no.1 into the losers bracket. Elsewhere in the first round tie between Fred Dinsmore and Craig Welsh, Dinsmore came through in the end 7-4. Dinsmore was then involved in a tense hill-hill battle with Danny Luton, which he came through 7-6. He followed that with an impressive 7-1 win over Abubaker.
Into the one-loss side of the draw, in the top half it was Abubaker who advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4 win over Dave Beaumont. In the bottom half Lee did it the hard way with a 6-3 win over Nick Oliver. Before a 6-2 win over Luton, and then a 6-4 win over Tony Southern to join Abubaker in the semi-finals.
As expected both semi-finals were close affairs with Lee beating Dinsmore 7-5 in a repeat of last years final. In the second semi-final Abubaker defeated old rival Roy Kimberley 7-5.
In the final, a missed 7-ball from Abubaker allowed Lee to step in and take the opening rack. In the next Abubaker returned the favour by pouncing on a missed 6-ball from Lee to level the scores. The high standard continued, and in the end it was Lee who was crowned Talisman British wheelchair 10-ball Champion with a 7-5 win over Abubaker.
In the Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series Danny Luton overhauled a 3 rack start to defeat Matt Lester 5-3.

The BWPPA tour now looks forward to a double header at Escape Pool Bar, Barnsley from 15-17th September as we have the first ever Nation-Continental Cup. A team contest styled on the famous Mosconi Cup, but this time it’s team Great Britain taking on team Europe. Dave Beaumont won the qualifier for the last spot on the Great Britain team. He will join Daniel Lee, Tony Southern, Roy Kimberley and Aslam Abubaker. The BWPPA tour descended on Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley once again for tour stop 2 of the campaign, the Simonis Grand Prix. This event saw the largest field for a BWPPA tour weekend in a number of years. Among the entrants were 2 debutants Lee Woodward from Birmingham, and Graham Brown from London. We were also delighted to welcome back to the tour Sheffield’s Gary Swift and Birmingham’s Adam Pearson.
Brown couldn’t have had a tougher welcome to the BWPPA tour losing 7-1 to former BWPPA #1 Abubaker. Abubaker followed that up by winning two tough matches, he beat current #1 and man of the moment Daniel Lee 7-5 before coming through a hill-hill encounter with Swift 7-6.
Elsewhere in the draw Woodward showed some signs of promise, only just being edged out 7-6 by fellow Brummie Pearson. BWPPA stalwart Danny Luton had a came through a tough match, beating Dave Beaumont 7-5 in a clash of English 8-ball World Champions. Roy Kimberley was next for Luton, Kimberley came through a 7-3 victor and followed that up by beating Tony Southern 7-5.
Over in the one-loss bracket Luton put in a strong performance to beat Pearson 7-1, and followed that with a 7-4 win over Swift, to force a rematch with “the Sandman” Kimberley in the semi-finals. In the semi it was Luton who turned the tables, beating Kimberley 7-4. In the other semi-final it was a carbon copy of an earlier match with Abubaker once again beating Lee 7-5.
In the final Luton took a scrappy first rack, he then doubled his advantage when Abubaker missed a 9-ball down the rail. Abubaker took the next to cut his deficit to 1, but then a missed 9-ball from Luton in the 4th rack enabled the Leicester cueman to level at 2-2. The next 2 racks were shared including a high quality run out from Abubaker following a miss on the 1-ball from Luton. It soon became 4-4, before Abubaker took the next 2 racks, and missed an 8-ball in the 11th rack, Luton stepped in, and Abubaker’s lead was cut down to one at 6-5. Luton was faced with a tricky cut on the 9 to take the match to a decider. Abubaker duly stepped in and made a shot, which under the circumstances was missable, but he took his first title of what could well be his last year on the BWPPA tour.
In the Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series there was a revised version of the handicapping system for this event with the players who previously received a 1 rack start now receiving a 2 racks start and players who received a 2 racks start receiving a 3 racks start. Lester received a walkover into the semi-finals, while debutant Woodward received a 2 racks start from the Players Championship Main event winner Southern. Southern took the match advancing to the semi-finals where he faced Beaumont, who beat Swift in the quarters 5-0.
It was a dramatic semi-final between Beaumont and Southern going all the way to a hill-hill decider which Beaumont took 5-4.
In the other semi-final Lester narrowly defeated Welsh 5-3 after receiving a 3 racks start. In the final Lester once again had a 3 racks start against Beaumont, the first 2 racks were shared and Beaumont took the next 2 racks to trail by 1. Lester held his nerve to win his first BWPPA Challenge event in his home club, after previously winning 2 Challenge events at the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy in Aylesbury.

The 2017 British Wheelchair Pool Players Association (BWPPA) tour got underway over weekend of 8/9 April 2017, with the Gentlemen’s Night Out (GNO) Players Championship. The tournament was held at the fabulous Wheelchair Cuesports Academy, which is based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury. This event boasted record prize money for the BWPPA tour of £850 and reduced entry fees.
This was mainly due to £1000 support from BWPPA patron Darren Appleton’s World Pool Series to be spread over the 2017 season.
We were delighted to welcome back Alexander Prokopiev who travelled all the way from Russia, now competing in his fourth year on the BWPPA tour and Stoke on Trent’s Dave Beaumont after a yearlong break from the tour.
Daniel Lee began the new season as Britain’s #1 wheelchair player following his victory in the BWPPA Predator British 9-ball Championship last November. Lee began strongly with a 7-4 win over Beaumont and a 7-4 win over Newport’s Craig Welsh for a place in the semi-finals.
Elsewhere in the draw new British Pool Federation President Tony Southern defeated South Yorkshire potter Darren Taylor 7-2, before taking an epic hill-hill victory over Roy Kimberley for a place in the semi-finals. Taylor had an excellent event finishing 5th.
Into the semi-finals, and Southern had to come through another hill-hill fight, this time over Welsh, who had battled back through the losers side with some impressive performances over the weekend, and Southern was lucky to take the match at the end.
In the other semi-final Lee came through a 7-4 winner over Danny Luton, who had also battled through the losers side following an early defeat by Welsh, beating Matt Lester, Beaumont and old rival Kimberley en-route.
Lee and Southern then contested the final for the first trophy of the season, which Southern edged 7-5 in what was a nip and tuck affair with Southern taking several frames when Lee missed game ball. Southern said afterwards, he definitely had the run of the ball in both the semi and the final, but maybe it made up in part for an injury ravaged recent European Championship he endured.
In the World Pool Series (WPS) Challenge Cup event Prokopiev defeated Taylor 5-2, before defeat at the hands of Beaumont in the semi-finals 5-2. In the opposite side of the draw Kimberley beat Lester 5-3, and Nick Oliver 5-4 to reach the final where Beaumont beat Kimberley 5-2 to take a record challenge cup 1st prize sponsored by the World Pool Series.

Congratulations to Daniel Lee for taking the no.1 ranking in 2016 in only his 2nd full year on tour, and winning 3 ranking events (events 2, 3 and 5), and to Fred Dinsmore and Roy Kimberley who each won a ranking event (events 1 and 4 respectively).
Congratulations also to Nicky Oliver and Matt Lester who both finished in the top 8 in the rankings.
Nicky Oliver won the overall challenge rankings battle but was pushed hard by Matt Lester.
We have had some new players this year, and although numbers have been lower than last season, we are confident in bringing players back by introducing a new format, and revised prize structure in 2017.
We would also like to add our congratulations to the players who won medals at the European Championships.
Tony Southern won a silver (8 ball), Daniel Lee won 2 bronze (8 & 10 ball) and a bronze for Fred Dinsmore in 9 ball.
Congratulations also to Fred Dinsmore for winning the singles event at the World Blackball Championships in Ireland, and becoming the first ever player to have won world titles in American Pool, Snooker and a version of English Pool. And also to Tony Southern for teaming up with Fred Dinsmore and winning the World Blackball Doubles title.

In addition we would like to thank our supporters around the world for helping us raise thousands of pounds during the year, and in particular we would like to thank our patron ‘Dynamite’ Darren Appleton for his fundraising efforts, raising the profile of the tour and inviting Daniel Lee and Fred Dinsmore to his World Series Event in 2017 to compete with the top professional players from around the world.
