12 months on from claiming his first main event title on the BWPPA tour Daniel Lee became the British 9-ball champion again, but this time the win came with added significance as Lee ends the season as the UK’s number 1 wheelchair pool player.
The Wheelchair Cuesports Academy at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury was once again the setting for the final tour stop of the season. Before the first ball was struck it was a three horse race for the top spot, with Fred Dinsmore and Roy Kimberley also in the running, but Lee knew if he progressed further than Dinsmore or Kimberley, then he would be assured of his place at the summit of the worlds largest wheelchair pool tour.
Lee began his campaign beating Danny Luton 7-2, before a much closer encounter edging past Tony Southern 7-5. He was then assured of his place at the top of the pile when he beat “the Sandman” Kimberley 7-5 in the semi-final. Elsewhere in the tournament Darren Taylor returned to the tour after appearing in his second BWPPA event for 10 years. Having started his campaign off with a 7-0 loss at the hands of Kimberley, Taylor then beat Matt Lester 7-3, before bowing out of the main event losing 7-4 to Craig Welsh.
Meanwhile Ireland’s Dinsmore was doing all he could to hold onto the top spot. Dinsmore began with a 7-2 win over Welsh; he then beat Kimberley and Southern 7-5 to reach the final.
Unfortunately this wasn’t enough and by the time Lee and Dinsmore met in the final. Lee was the new number 1. It certainly showed how confident Lee was, as he raced into a 4-0 lead. It was always going to be tough from there, even for a player of Dinsmore’s quality. Lee took the match 7-4, and with it his third main event title this season. Along with the trophy, Lee collected a brand new Predator 8K3 cue from the title sponsors.
In the challenge event, the equation was simpler. As long as Nick Oliver was in the draw, he would take top spot in the challenge event rankings. Unfortunately for the Great N.O he was unable to complete a hat-trick of Challenge titles after he lost 5-3 to Luton in the semi-finals. Welsh took the challenge title with a 5-4 win over Luton.
Challenge number 1 ranked player Oliver picked up a brand new Poison Anthrax 3 cue from our tour sponsors Poison Cues. As well as Lee and Oliver, the players ranked 2-6 picked up wonderful prizes from tour sponsors Predator Cues and Talisman Cases.
A video of the main event final is available here. Pictures of the event can be found here in the BWPPA gallery.

Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley was the venue for the penultimate BWPPA event of the season on 10/11 September 2016, the Kamui 9-ball Shootout.
Birmingham’s Roy Kimberley won his first main event on the tour in over 3 years beating Midlands rival Aslam Abubaker in the final.
Going into the event Daniel Lee and Fred Dinsmore seemed the only players still in realistic contention for the no.1 spot at the end of the season, which not only brings with it its own prestige but also a cue from our generous friends at Predator. Only some unusual results against the formbook could change that!
After a first round bye, Kimberley got his campaign off to a good start with a hard fought 7-4 win over Challenge Cup Rankings Leader Nicky Oliver, and then he went into battle with old foe Abubaker who beat him 7-4.
This sent Kimberley to the losers’ bracket where he had a 7-4 win over Danny Luton.
In the semi-final he faced Tony Southern, and in a closely fought match, he played the better safety of the 2 to take a 7-5 win for a place in the final.
In the other half of the draw, current no. 1 Lee won his first match 7-3 v Luton. He then lost to Southern 7-4 to go over to the loser’s side, where he became only the 2nd player in the tours history to deny Fred Dinsmore a place in the semi-finals.
In the semi-final he faced Abubaker, and it was Abubaker who benefited from a crucial fluke late on to advance to the final with a 7-5 win.
The final was a rather one-sided affair, with Abubaker not at his usual level, this combined with flawless positional play from Kimberley, enabled him to take it 7-3.
After the final Kimberley said of his win “I would like to thank George Vetters and all the staff at the Escape Pool Bar, we are always made welcome, and I’m delighted to back winning events.
This result puts the cat amongst the pigeons in the rankings going into the final event of the season in November, with Kimberley now in the mix, but the combinations are complex!!
For Lee the equation is simple make the final, or if not finish better in the event than both Dinsmore and Kimberley.
Dinsmore or Kimberley have to win the event and hope Lee does not make the final to take the top spot on count back, it will be certainly be an exciting climax to the season!
The Challenge Cup final was won by Nicky Oliver who beat Darren Taylor 5-2. This was Oliver’s 2nd win a row and he is now odds-on to top the challenge rankings.
A video of the main event final is available here. Pictures of the event can be found here in the BWPPA gallery.

The BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2016 season on the 30th/31st July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville.
In conditions hotter than normal, the dress code had to be relaxed for the comfort of the players. Despite the heat, there was some excellent pool on show as usual.
Fred Dinsmore was keen to extend his lead at the top of the rankings, but he knew that any slip-up and Daniel Lee would be closing in on him in his bid to be no.1 in the rankings at the end of the season, and take with it the beautiful cue donated by tour sponsors Predator Cues.
As the final 10-ball of the weekend was potted it was Lee who took home the spoils with victory over Dinsmore.
Lee started off with a 6-2 win over Alexander Prokopiev who had again made the 11,000 Kilometer journey from Yakutsk in Russia, all of BWPPA thank Alexander for his efforts, which put some of the journeys the British players have to make into perspective.
Lee then followed this up with a 7-5 win over Tony Southern. This sent him into the semi-final.
In the other half of the draw, Dinsmore was in devastating form, beating Matt Lester and Danny Luton 6-0 to reach the semi-finals.
In the play-off round Craig Welsh played some of the best pool of his career to beat Southern 6-2, and Luton beat Nicky Oliver 6-0, but Oliver would have a better day on the Sunday.
The first semi-final saw Lee winning convincingly 6-0 over Luton. The second semi-final was much closer than the 6-3 score line in favour of Dinsmore suggests, and Welsh can be proud of his efforts over the weekend.
The Main event final between Dinsmore and Lee was high quality. The game turned on two missed 10-balls by Dinsmore, which he would get 99/100 times, which made the score 4-2 to Lee. In the end, it was Lee who won his 3rd event out of 4 with a 6-2 victory.
In the latest BWPPA Rankings, Lee has jumped 20 points ahead of Dinsmore at the top, and whilst it is now looking like a 2 man race, with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one.
The Challenge Cup final was won by Oliver who beat Prokopiev 5-4, to lead the challenge rankings with 2 events remaining.
A video of the main event final is available here. Pictures of the event will be are here in the BWPPA gallery.
The next event is the Kamui 9-ball Shootout, which will be held at the Escape Pool Bar, Barnsley on the weekend of 10th/11th September 2016. In a concerted effort from BWPPA to expand the tour, this will be a free entry event for all players, and there will be extra money added to the prize fund if 16 or more players attend.

After a great start to the 2016 season at the ‘BWPPA/BWCSA Pool Academy’ at Stoke Mandeville, it was back to one of our favourite venues, as the Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley hosting the 2nd BWPPA event of the season on 14/15 May 2016.
Daniel Lee narrowed the gap at the top of the rankings to Fred Dinsmore, as he won his second event in the last three, with a convincing 7-3 win over Roy Kimberley.
As Dinsmore was the No. 1 seed, he received a first round bye, then had a solid 7-2 win over Danny Luton, to advance to the winners qualifying round where he had a 7-4 win over old rival Aslam Abubaker to reach the semi-finals, where he would face Kimberley.
Kimberley had come through a hard fought game with Tony Southern 7-5, then lost 7-5 to Lee, before coming back through the losers’ side. In an epic game that went this way and that, Kimberley was back to his best as some awesome clearances under pressure gave him the win by the smallest amount possible at 7-6 over a deflated and disappointed Dinsmore.
In the other half of the draw, London’s Lee (following a 1st round bye) had a 7-1 win over Matt Lester, Lee then beat Kimberley 7-2, to reach the semi finals.
In the other semi-final it was the Londoner who beat Abubaker with a 7-3 score line.
So to the final, and it was a repeat of the earlier encounter between Lee, and Birmingham’s Kimberley. Lee won convincingly 7-3.
Although Dinsmore is ahead in the rankings, as it’s a best 4 out of 5 ranking system, only this season’s results count at the end of the season and Lee is currently in a great position provisionally going into event 3.
The Challenge Cup final was won by Southern who beat Nicky Oliver 5-3, Southern ended Matt Lester’s two event winning streak in the semi-final.
Throughout the weekend some of the action was streamed online via Facebook much to the enjoyment of pool fans around the world. We are looking into the possibility of continuing this in the future to give greater exposure of the tour and the high quality of our players. This will benefit not only pool fans worldwide, but also give greater exposure to our sponsors and tour partners.

The next event is the Talisman British Wheelchair 10 Ball Championship Shootout, which will be held at the BWPPA/BWCSA ‘Pool Academy’ at Stoke Mandeville on the weekend of 30th/31st July 2016.

It is with great pleasure that BWPPA can announce that Cheqio have agreed to become a sponsor of the tour.
Cheqio have made an awesome €500 donation to the BWPPA team at the 2016 European Championship.
Cheqio will be supplying their Precision Capsules (a food supplement) and Precision Drinks to the BWPPA team at the 2016 European Championships.
Roy Kimberley, the Chairperson of the BWPPA tour had this to say, “The BWPPA committee and all of its players, are very proud that Cheqio will support the tour into 2016, joining a ever growing list of sponsors who continue to support the biggest and most competitive wheelchair pool tour in the world..
In 2016, BWPPA is proudly sponsored by the Gentlemen’s Night Out, Simonis Cloth, Gosport Pool Arena, Kamui, Predator, Aramith, AB Wallace Trophies, Magic Rack, The Escape Pool Bar, and of course the Cheqio Brand, making the perfect combination of the best equipment in the best clubs in the country.

The 2016 BWPPA season began on the 5th/6th March 2016 with the GNO Southern 9-ball Open held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sports Academy at Stoke Mandeville. The title sponsor of the event is our main tour sponsor the Gentleman’s Night Out charity, based in the West Midlands.
The tour got off to a great start with some excellent pool on show. Among the entries was Stuart Vincent, who was appearing at his first BWPPA event. Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore was keen to add to his 2 victories during the 2015 season, which helped him to the top of the ranking for a 2nd successive year.
Following his bye into round 2 as no.1 seed, Dinsmore started off with a 7-0 win over the debutant Vincent. Dinsmore then followed this up with a 7-2 win over great rival Roy Kimberley. This sent him into the semi-final, while Vincent showed great spirit in the losers bracket making a comeback, which pushed Matt Lester as hard as he could. We hope to see Stuart Vincent at many more BWPPA events in the future. He certainly has the talent to challenge the best on tour.
The other half of the draw was loaded with talent, Lee beat Craig Welsh 7-4, then held off a comeback from Tony Southern to win beat 7-5.
In the first semi-final Southern (who had come through the losers side with a 7-2 win over Matt Lester) lost 7-2 in a one sided match with Dinsmore.
In the other semi-final it was Lee against Kimberley (who had beaten Welsh 7-4 in the qualifying round), and Lee won comfortably 7-2, to make his 2nd successive final and guaranteed his move to 2nd in the rankings.
As the final 9-ball of the weekend was potted it was Dinsmore who took home the spoils with victory in the Main Event over Lee, and extended his lead at the top of the rankings. This year the players again battle for a superb prize of a top of the range cue from one of our longest serving main sponsors, Predator Cues, which will be awarded to the no.1 ranked player at the end of the season.
The Main event final between Lee and Dinsmore was a rather one-sided match, with some excellent clearances mixed with some good safety and kicking.
At 4-0 down, Lee hardly had a chance at the table as Dinsmore continued his weekend of almost flawless pool, and it was him who took the title with a 7-2 victory. After the final the Champion said “ I Played very solid all weekend. Thanks to my sponsors, Predator, Volturi, Cheqio, and Ger Dunphy Snooker & Pool, special thanks to my coach Johny Vanrijkel. We had a lot to think about after Sweden and he gave me the key to turn my form around quicker than I thought possible. Also huge thanks to everybody who supported the fundraising and Darren for his efforts and constant support, and to the BWPPA committee.”
Lee is now 23 points behind Dinsmore at the top of the rankings, with Southern dropping to 3rd, but with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one at the ‘Escape Pool Bar’ in Barnsley in May.
In the Challenge Cup Final Matt Lester won his 2nd challenge event in a row to beat Nicky Oliver 7-5. Afterwards he said, “It’s nice to keep the winning feeling alive. Thanks to Jason Francis at Snooker Legends and especially to George and Amanda at Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley. Their support means so much!”
A full video of the main event final is available here pictures of the event are here in the BWPPA gallery.
The BWPPA team head to Austria in April for the European Championships, the team captained by Southern also consists of Kimberley, Lee, Matt Duffy, and we must also mention BWPPA member Fred Dinsmore from Ireland. See here for more details of that event.
The 2016 BWPPA tour is scheduled to continue from May 14th – 15th in Barnsley at the ‘Escape Pool Bar’.
