Dinsmore does the double, and retains the Kamui 9-Ball shootout.

Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley was the venue for the 4th BWPPA event of the season on 5/6 September 2015.

Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore won his 2nd tour event in a row beating Aslam Abubaker in the final.

Dinsmore went into the event as one of 3 players still in realistic contention for the no.1 spot at the end of the season, which not only brings with it its own prestige but also a cue from our generous friends at Predator.

After the first round Dinsmore got his campaign off to a good start with a hard fought 7-5 win over Daniel Lee, and then he went into battle with old foe Roy Kimberley and beat him 7-4.

In the semi-final he faced Tony Southern, the Irishman raced through the match with a 7-3 win for a place in yet another BWPPA Main Event final.

In the other half of the draw: Aslam Abubaker won his first match 7-1 v Danny Luton. He then beat Southern in a hill-hill decider to advance to the semi-finals.

In the semi-final he faced Kimberley, and raced to a 7-2 win to get through to a repeat of the Talisman British 10-ball Championship final.

It looked like it would be a one sided affair, as Dinsmore roared into 4-0 lead, but in a weekend of tough games Abubaker demonstrated the qualities that have helped him to the top end of the rankings as he dragged himself back into the match, reeling off 3 racks in succession. Abubaker then had a great chance to level but it was not to be as Dinsmore played really well to take it 7-4.

After the final Dinsmore said of his win “I would like to thank George Vetters and all the staff at the Escape Pool Bar, we are always made welcome, and I’m delighted to be winning events and putting myself in prime contention for the no.1 position.

The Challenge Cup final was won by Daniel Lee who beat Nicky Oliver 5-4, after Oliver was 4-1 ahead.

Oliver had a great weekend including a 5-4 win over double wheelchair world 8-ball champion Dave Beaumont.

Also Alexander Prokopiev came again from Russia and had a 7-6 win over Oliver and a good win over Matt Lester, before losing to Southern and Luton respectively, all of BWPPA congratulate Alexander on his efforts.

A video of the main event final is available here. Pictures of the event can be found in the BWPPA gallery.

The season concludes with the Predator British 9-ball Championships, which will be held at the BWSCA/BWPPA Pool Academy, on the weekend of 14th/15th November 2015.

Dinsmore and Southern are now the only players who can claim top spot, although Southern has to win the event to take the crown.

The BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2015 season on the 11th/12th July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville.

The Main Event saw a smaller field than usual with 10 players entering, although we also had John White and Chris Brown attend the challenge event on the Sunday, as they could not play in the main event due to other commitments.

Prior to the Main Event Dave Beaumont was congratulated for retaining his English 8-ball Pool World Wheelchair title in Blackpool recently.

In conditions much hotter than normal, the dress code had to be relaxed for the comfort of the players. Despite the heat, there was some excellent pool on show as usual.

Fred Dinsmore was keen to extend his lead at the top of the rankings, but he knew that any slip ups and Tony Southern and others would be closing in on him in his bid to be no.1 in the rankings at the end of the season, and take with it the beautiful cue donated by tour sponsors Predator Cues.

As the final 10-ball of the weekend was potted it was Dinsmore who took home the spoils with victory over Aslam Abubaker.

Following his bye into round 2, Dinsmore started off with a hard fought 7-5 win over Daniel Lee, who is always a hard opponent to get past. Dinsmore then followed this up with an equally hard 7-5 win over Beaumont. This sent Dinsmore into the semi-final, where he beat Roy Kimberley 7-4 to again make the final.

Following a first round bye, Abubaker beat Craig Welsh 7-2, then old rival Tony Southern 7-3 to reach the semi-finals, and there he faced Danny Luton, who himself had recorded 4 good wins to get that far. It was Abubaker who was in devastating form and won 7-2.

The Main event final between Dinsmore and Abubaker was an unusually one-sided match. The game turned in the 4th rack at 2-1 to Dinsmore, when Abubaker went in off. In the end, it was Dinsmore who retained his title with a 7-2 victory.

In the latest BWPPA Rankings, Dinsmore is now 35 points ahead of Southern at the top, and whilst it is now looking like a 2 man race, with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one.

IMG_5085

The Challenge Cup final was won by Beaumont who beat Lee 5-3.

A special mention to seasoned member of our tour Matt Lester who had a great 5-1 win over White in the challenge cup, and was leading Lee 4-1 in the semi-finals before losing 5-4.

A video of the main event final is available here. Pictures of the event can be found in the BWPPA gallery.

The next event is the Kamui 9-ball Shootout, which will be held at the Escape Pool Bar, Barnsley on the weekend of 5th/6th September 2015.

SOUTHERN WINS SIMONIS NORTHERN 9-BALL Open, ABUBAKER TAKES THE CHALLENGE CUP

IMG_4884After a great start to the 2015 season at the ‘BWPPA/BWCSA Pool Academy’ at Stoke Mandeville, it was back to one of our favourite venues, as the Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley hosting the 2nd BWPPA event of the season on 16/17 May 2015.

Tony Southern narrowed the gap at the top of the rankings to Fred Dinsmore, as he won his second event in a row with a convincing 7-1 win over joint 2014 player of the year Daniel Lee, and lost just 6 racks in the whole event.
As Dinsmore was the No. 1 seed, he received a first round bye, then had a solid 7-3 win over Dave Beaumont, to advance to the winners qualifying round where he had a 7-4 win over old rival Roy Kimberley to reach the semi-finals.
Kimberley had come through a hard fought game with Matt ‘The Doncaster Destroyer’ Lester, and the score of 7-3 flattered Kimberley, as Lester is improving each event and is a credit to the tour.
In the other half of the draw, Southern (following a 1st round bye) had a 7-2 win over Matt Duffy, then beat Lee 7-0, to reach the semi finals.
In the losers side final round Duffy beat Kimberley 7-5, and Lee beat Beaumont 7-3, to both advance into the semi-finals.
In the first semi-finals, Lee beat an out of sorts Dinsmore 7-2.
In the other semi-final it was Southern who beat Duffy with a 7-3 score line.

IMG_4879
So to the final, and it was almost a repeat of their earlier match, as Southern won 7-1, to take his 2nd event on the trot, but great credit to Lee, making his first final exactly a year after joining the tour, and he has shown he will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
Although Dinsmore is ahead in the rankings, as it’s a best 4 out of 5 ranking system, only this seasons results count at the end of the season and with 2 wins from 2 events, Southern is currently in pole position provisionally going into event 3.

SOUTHERN, LUTON & KIMBERLEY MEDAL, BUT TAHTI & DINSMORE TAKE THE GOLD

The GB Team consisting of Roy Kimberley, Aslam Abubaker (9-ball only), Craig Welsh, Danny Luton, Daniel Lee and Captain Tony Southern, arrived in the Algarve, Portugal, with hopes high of winning medals at these prestigious championships.

The GB team came home with 4 medals, a silver and bronze for Southern, silver for Luton, and a bronze for Kimberley, but the rest of the team were left disappointed despite some sterling performances.

Fred Dinsmore from Ireland who also plays on the BWPPA tour, ended the event with a medal of each colour including a gold in the 8-ball, but was just beaten by Jouni Tahti (Finland) as the top overall player as Tahti took home both the 9-ball and 10-ball gold medals.

High quality matches and dramatic decisions characterize the wheelchair competition, with many outstanding players across the three disciplines.

10-ball

In the 10-ball division, there was the first of many battles, with some great match ups, and the first match between Daniel Lee and Kurt Deklerck (Belgium) who were incredibly drawn against each other in the 1st round of all 3 disciplines at odds of over 1000-1, with Deklerck winning on each occasion in some incredibly close fought matches.

Kimberley was the only GB player to make the semi-finals, where he faced the greatest wheelchair player of all time Jouni Tahti (Finland) and despite a great effort, Kimberley lost 6-4.

In the other semi-final Dinsmore faced Deklerck, and it went to the final rack, and a great finish put Deklerck through to the final.

In the final, Deklerck was ahead throughout the match, and should have closed the match out when 6-4 up, however Tahti showed his class to take the gold medal, with a 7-6 win.

10 ball

8-Ball

In the 8-ball division, there was an all GB semi-final as Luton beat Southern 6-4 to make the final.

In the other semi-final Dinsmore again faced Deklerck, and it went to the final rack again, but the tables were turned as Dinsmore went through to the final 5-4.

In the final, Dinsmore’s expansive potting game was too much for Luton, who despite a gritty effort lost 5-2.

8 ball

9-Ball

Onto the final discipline, 9 ball, and there was time to celebrate again as 4 GB players came trough as winners into the quarter-finals (Southern, Kimberley, Luton and Abubaker)

Abubaker lost a close match with DeKlerck 7-5, and Kimberley lost by the same score to Tahti when poised for victory.

Luton lost 7-3 to Dinsmore, whilst Southern was the only GB player to reach the semi-finals with a 7-2 win over Majej Brajkovic (Slovenia).

In the semi-finals Southern won a dramatic hill-hill match with Deklerck 7-6, and faced Tahti in the final who had a 7-5 win over Dinsmore.

In the final a visibly tired Southern went 3-0 down before clawing back to 4-4, however the better staying power of Tahti prevailed as he took his 2nd gold of the event with a 7-4.

9 ball

The Dynamic European Championships have drawn a huge amount of media attention throughout the entire 10 days. Many media representatives from TV, radio, print and Internet media have covered the European Championships. The highlight was the live coverage on the web from www.kozoom.com.

In 2015 the event is scheduled to be held in Austria

The GB Team would also like to thank our patron Darren Appleton for all his fundraising efforts as he and the contributors raised over £1200, which went towards to teams costs for this event

SOUTHERN WINS THE FIRST EVENT OF THE 2015 SEASON

IMG_4436.jpg

The BWPPA began the 2015 season on the 21st/22nd March 2015 with the GNO Southern 9-ball Open held at the newly opened BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville, this event is named after the main tour sponsor the Gentleman’s Night Out charity.

We had a solid turn out, including Aleksandr Prokopiev who again made the long trip from Russia. We welcomed a new player to the tour, Mall Johnson.

The tour got off to a great start with some excellent pool on show as usual at these events. Fred Dinsmore was keen to add to his 3 successive victories at the end of the 2014 season, which enabled him to take a clear lead at the top of the rankings.

In the players meeting before play commenced Dinsmore and Daniel Lee were jointly awarded the honour of being the 2014 players player of the season. Also at the meeting, each player was presented with a gift pack from our generous sponsors at Kamui, comprising of 4 tips, 2 chalks and chalk holders, many many thanks to all at Kamui. We were also proud to inform the players of our newly acquired sponsor Aramith Balls. They have very kindly donated 8 sets of Pro TV balls to the tour. With the tables all covered in Simonis Cloths and a brand new set of balls on each table we really did offer professional playing conditions this weekend.

As the final 9-ball of the weekend was potted it was Southern who took home the spoils with victory in the Main Event and regained the no 2 spot from Aslam Abubaker. This year the players again battle for a superb prize of a top range cue from one of our longest serving main sponsors Predator, which will be awarded to the no.1 ranked player at the end of the season.

Following his bye into round 2 as no.3 seed, Southern started off with a 7-2 win over Craig Welsh. Southern then followed this up with a 7-3 win over great rival Abubaker.   This sent Southern into the semi-final.

The other half of the draw was loaded with talent, Dinsmore beat old rival Danny Luton 7-5, then beat Dave Beaumont 7-0, which was a surprise as Beaumont had beat Roy Kimberley 7-6, and Kimberley was on a high having recently won the European Pool Masters (Malmo open) which carried one of the biggest prizes ever in Wheelchair Pool (€1000).

In the first semi-final Abubaker (who had come through the losers side with a 7-4 win over Kimberley) lost 7-6 in an epic match with Dinsmore.

In the other semi-final it was Southern against Welsh (who had beaten Beaumont 7-3 in the qualifying round), the result was the same as the earlier game, with a 7-2 win for Southern, but Welsh can be really pleased with his performances.

The Main event final between Southern and Dinsmore was a fast paced match, with some excellent clearances mixed with some good safety and kicking.

At 4-3 down, Southern went in off the 8-ball to give Fred a 5-3 lead in the race to 7. At 6-4 up and with Southern moments away from shaking hands, Dinsmore could not get comfortable on a makeable 9-ball, and missed unexpectedly.

This gave Southern a boost, and after taking the match to a final rack, and after making a combo shot on the 9, it was him who took the title with a 7-6 victory, punching the air with delight.

After the final Southern said of his win “I am delighted to retain my title for the 3rd year in a row, as I’ve been struggling recently, but I played well all weekend and was determined not to let myself down.

I would like to thank my main sponsors Riley’s, HASSRA, CSSC and Predator Cues, and of course all the BWPPA tour sponsors.

I would also like to thank Darren Appleton, the patron of the tour, for the help I got from his perfect practice DVD, and his messages of encouragement and support.

You can find out more about his DVD at www.darrenappleton.com

Southern is now 40 points behind Dinsmore at the top of the rankings, with Abubaker on the same points close behind, but with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one at the ‘Escape Pool Bar’ in Barnsley in May.

In the Challenge Cup Final Kimberley beat Lee 5-3.

The BWPPA team head to Portugal in April for the European Championships, the team captained by Southern also consists of Kimberley, Abubaker, Luton, Welsh, and Lee, and we must also mention BWPPA member Fred Dinsmore from Ireland. See here for more details of that event.

The 2015 BWPPA tour is scheduled to continue in May in Barnsley at the ‘Escape Pool Bar’.
